3 Rules for Workprov: How to Incorporate Improv In the Workplace

A: My office!

Great we’ll take the suggestion of office to start this blog.

I am an employee of Boston's Improv Asylum and during my (nontenured) time there, I have seen my fair share of businesses holding company outings to enjoy the funny people of the stage.

From the company’s standpoint, it is a great way to bond with coworkers and have something to talk about by the water cooler on Monday. As an employee, one just sees a large group of adults lost in the freedom of an open bar.

A company outing to a local improv theatre should be used as an opportunity to observe skills that can be translated into any and every situation one could encounter in the workplace…and to watch the funny people be funny.

1. The "Most Basic of Basics Rule": Yes, And

It’s a book title and Improv master, Tina Fey, swears by it.

It is the rule of Yes, and. This is the concept of not only accepting what someone is saying, but also adding to it.

It’s safe to say that progress comes to a halt when forward steps in a process are negated. It becomes difficult to work past an absolute “no.”

In Improv, if an actor establishes that the scene is in a dog park and another actor says, “No, this isn’t a dog park, we’re sky diving,” it essentially plows the scene into the ground (I’m on a roll folks).

Let’s apply it to the business world:

When brainstorming ideas for a new campaign, how much does it suck when someone shuts down your contribution, “No, that will never work,", "Please leave, you were never asked to join this meeting,", "You're not an employee here.”

A terrible experience, right?

It is much more proactive to accept the idea and build upon it, “Yes, a dog theme is a viable option and this is how we can apply it.” This allows minds to flow freely in a creative way without the fear of being shut down.

2. The “Two of the 5 Senses” Rule: Listen

Yes, the other senses, like taste, are important in Improv and work. But whether it’s performing, brainstorming, or interacting with a 3 year old, it is important to hear an offer in order to build on it.

“Hey, that’s only one sense, I feel cheated!” I’m honored you feel that way, but calm yourself.

In this case, hearing links to seeing. Much like you learned in Communication 101, nonverbal interaction can provide greater meaning to verbal interaction. If an actor says, “Your dog is definitely alive,” while violently shaking their head and another actor, who was not fully listening, jumps into the scene playing with that dog, then the magic of make-believe is kind of destroyed.

Not listening properly at work can lead to lost ideas, tension, and awkwardly still showing up at 9AM every day even though you were fired a week ago.

3. The “Intention of Belts (ATTN: Millennials)” Rule: Provide Support

One of the comforts of improv comedy - in comparison to stand up comedy - is your team. When you get stuck in a scene (unable to think of another line, the audience isn’t laughing, or the peak of the scene has been hit) your team will literally sweep you out of it.

They’re also there to support your choices.

If you walk on stage and say, “Dr. Steve, I’m sorry you lost that patient today, ” you can count on your scene partner to “yes, and” you with a response such as: “I’m just sorry I got the same sketch artist as Tom Brady to do the rendering” (Get it, cause the patient was lost…like a dog. It took me a significant amount of time to write that, to the point I’m not sure it’s relevant anymore).

The ability to depend on a supportive team is invaluable in the workplace. You can trust they will build on your ideas, back decisions you’ve made or, help you make them. They will also support you trash-talking that one guy who always happens to be leaving the kitchen with a look of both shame and pleasure when someone’s lunch goes missing.

Ta Da!
Now you are partially equipped to become a stronger employee and coworker! If this doesn’t work, have a fellow coworker read it as well and perform some two person scenes at the next company-wide meeting. Oh, and Periscope it so we can watch!

Tony Awards: What You Can't See on TV

Did you know you can actually buy tickets to the Tony Awards? It’s true, I did it! My friend and I spent $334 each (including fees, no shame) to watch the 69^th Annual Tony Awards from seats in the third from last row of Radio City Music Hall.

We all know the flow of an Awards Show. The witty hosts; the build up to an award; the acceptance speeches; the seated celebrity cutaways.

I wanted to share what happens when the cameras aren’t on during a live awards show.

First: Arrival

After getting all dolled up at a friend’s apartment in the middle of the Bronx, we took an Uber to Radio City Music Hall. As we were not “officially” deemed celebrity status by the “people who matter”, we got out of the car at the end of the blocked street.

We were a couple of hours early so we grabbed dinner in our black tie attire at a convenience store. Then attempted to spot celebrities on the red carpet.

Both my friend and I (despite heels) are height-challenged. We are short. Because of our vertical disadvantage, it was through the raised screens of others' iPhones that we caught glimpses of Kathy Najimy, Debra Messing, and Dame Helen Mirren as they exited their cars. This brought a new meaning to “live television” for the both of us.

We entered through the back entrance of the Hall with the other plebeians who had spent an exorbitant amount of money for the experience of watching tourists wonder why we weren’t important enough to be on the red carpet.

Then: The Pre-Show

As ticket holders, we knew the doors closed at 7:00. What we didn’t know was it was due to the pre-show beginning at 7:05. Luckily, my friend and I made it to our seats just in time to hear the 5 minute call. This was after a trip to the bathroom with someone I swore was P!nk, and paying $15 for a glass of wine. It was not P!nk. It was wine.

The pre-show consists of the presentations they show clips of after commercial breaks.

“Earlier tonight, we presented the award for this category you should care about to this person you should probably know.” Also: “This is what the people who run this event had to say.”

So think about this. When an awards show runs a half an hour to an hour long, the theatre audience has been sitting there for an hour longer than you have. Those awards also continued during most commercial breaks. This year, the presenters of these awards were the 2014 winners for Best Featured Actor and Best Actress in a Musical, James Monroe Iglehart and Jessie Mueller.

There was a mysterious man on the God mic (the microphone used to address the whole theatre). He announced the amount of time before going live. When the 45-seconds-to-go mark would hit, one could watch a scramble of seat-fillers trip over each other to make it to their seats in time. At five seconds we were all instructed to clap and the lights rose and the show began.

Next: The Tonys

Watching the show with a production perspective was impressive.

It was clear how much the crew had rehearsed to guarantee a smoothly run show. There were five steadi cams that roamed the floor for close-ups during nomination announcements. One of those also covered the stage. During performances this camera operator would sprint from the floor, up and over into the pit. Then he'd run onto the stage, and back into the pit with the help of his back spot. They all always knew where to be and where they were going. I assume they had earpieces telling them this info, but rehearsal notes were definitely studied.

There were three jibs. Three giant jibs. Two were hanging from the third mezzanine in front of us so the plebeians were not seen on television. The third one stayed on stage. It rolled out from behind the curtain to capture performances. During presentations it stayed hidden behind the curtain.

The stage was divided into several parts. Part of the stage was lit for award presentations and bits from the adorable hosting duo, Alan Cumming and Kristin Chenoweth. The other parts had cameramen and crew running around setting up for the next “scene”. In fact, when Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale were presenting for Best Featured Actor in a Musical you may have seen Rose Byrne laughing and looking away from the camera. Maybe you assumed she found the bit Chenoweth and Cumming did dressed in gender reversed roles from The King and I, amusing. Well folks, I'm here to tell you what really happened. While exiting the stage, Cumming’s dress got stuck. Chenoweth tried her best to pull him off stage by his arms, but it was a man in the audience that reached up and freed the dress. This is what live theatre is all about, people.

Finally: Personal Wrap Up

Although we were physically there, a part of me still felt like a spectator in the same way I do when I watch it on television. We were so far away that there were only two ways to tell who was talking on stage. Through the announcement of their names or by looking at the big screens on either side of the stage.

But this awards show is not designed for the entertainment of the 3rd Mezzanine patrons, is it?

It's purpose is to celebrate those who have accomplished amazing feats in the world of theatre.

It was this detachment that humbled me. I'm a theatre junky and I've never felt as fortunate as I did witnessing my heroes' achievements recognized. Even if it was through a second screen.

I mean, I was in the same room as them. The. Same Room.

Nothing could beat celebrating the triumphs of the Broadway family in a room - and mezzanine - filled with fellow passionate theatre people.

This year Broadway had more patrons than all the major New York sports teams combined. The Award for Best Book of a Musical went to an all female writing team. The first Excellence in Theatre Education Tony went to a performing arts teacher from North Carolina. And the Award for Best Musical went to a show about a young lesbian growing up with her gay father, Fun Home.

It was an experience I am grateful for - and hope to never pay for again. #TonysInviteErica2016

Future Features of Social Media: Q&A

Q: Who?

A: Twitter.

As a Social Media Manager I spend most of my day on Twitter, so I have noticed the recent updates Twitter has made. For instance, quoting a tweet had been such a pain in the past (see what I did there?), not enough characters, weird short links, basically a poor feature with good intentions.

The new format is fantastic. A quoted retweet is essentially posted as an interactive image, using significantly fewer characters while allowing one to easily access the original tweet.

Q: What?
A: See Friendship

The next step for Twitter is to take a note from Facebook (yeah, I wrote it. Facebook.)

There’s a feature on Facebook called “See Friendship”. If you’re unfamiliar, log onto Facebook (in a separate tab to keep this page alive, please, this is all I have), pick one of your friends and click on the ellipses over their cover photo. In the drop down menu, click on “See Friendship”. The feature allows you to see your Facebook history with a person - events attended together, photos taken together, mutual friends, likes, and posts. Feel free to explore…I’ll wait.

Q: I'm back. How?
A: Welcome. A Twittership

Now, think about applying this concept to Twitter, but in a slightly different way. Since you are able to easily follow and communicate with those who don’t necessarily follow you back (i.e. celebrities, major corporations), the ability to “See Friendship” should apply to those relationships as well. You can already see what followers you have in common, but there’s no way to see previous tweets you have directed at other users and visa versa. This application, which I have termed “See Twittership” (yes, I just graduated college), would allow you to see previous Twitter interactions including tweets/replies, favorites, and common retweets.

That way you don’t have to take a screenshot when a celebrity interacts with you cause that’s lame. Who does that, what? Hello?

Q: Hello. Will Twitter pay you for this idea?

A: They absolutely can - @Twitter.

Q: Does writing “@Twitter” while not on Twitter mean the company is automatically notified you have said something to them?
A: …No.

The Bandit Band Member of the Boston Marathon

“Hey, didn’t I see you singing a ZZ Top song back there?”

Brendan Cheever is a Framingham local, the owner of Cheever Industries, and a marathon runner, who has had two extremely unique experiences at the Framingham 6 Mile Moment.

“Oh, the Marathon’s coming up on Monday, I think I’ll run it.” Cheever was a bandit runner as a kid, jumping in and running for about six miles before stopping at The Chicken Bone to watch the trained runners go by. He finally got the chance to officially run the marathon in 2013.

Cheever’s oldest son has autism and attends the Nashoba Learning Group out of Bedford, MA. Each year, the school receives bibs for the Boston Marathon and after getting an email about registering to run, Cheever thought, “Well if I click on this now, this is going to change my life.”

He would actually have to train for this marathon.

Aside from bandit running, Cheever never considered himself an athlete, but definitely a musician. He was the front man of Controlled Aggression as the lead singer and bass player for about ten years, performing with the likes of Staind, Nullset, and even Godsmack. As someone with such a passion for music, it’s funny that he doesn’t listen to it when he runs. In fact, he doesn’t even keep his phone with him.

“Everybody thinks because I’m in a band that I want to listen to music when I run, but I don’t like to listen to music when I run. I just like to listen to the birds that you wouldn’t hear if you were plugged into electronics.”

Cheever was unplugged at the 2013 Boston Marathon and enjoyed the noise of the crowd, he high-fived sign-holding family members outside of TJ’s in Ashland as he made his way to the 6 Mile Moment. While running down Waverly street, he knew his friends that make up the band Tester were performing in the MediaBoss Television parking lot and decided to hop on stage with them, “I don’t think they were surprised when I jumped off and jumped up on stage. I sang two thirds of [Sharp Dressed Man] and I was just kind of like, ‘I gotta go!’ And I jumped back on the road and ran.”

Unfortunately, Cheever wasn’t able to finish in 2013 due to the tragedy at the finish line. He and his running buddy from Nashoba Learning Group were almost in Boston when looks of concern began to show on fellow runners who had their phones and spectators, “We had no where to go, we weren’t going to get off the road and hop in our cars and drive away. We just, kind of continued to run, looking for updates from people on the side of the road, or a police officer.” Cheever and his friend safely made it home hours later.

In 2014, Cheever was given a bib for the Boston Marathon from the Nashoba Learning Group again (everyone who wasn’t able to finish in 2013 had the opportunity to run in 2014). Happy to have the rare second chance, Cheever ran down Waverly with his friends and family cheering him on again, this time to the finish. He did, however, make one stop along the way.

“I just wanted to say hello to them, they weren’t even in the middle of playing. When (lead-singer) Tony saw me he was like, ‘Hey let’s do a song!’ and I said, ‘Are you ready?’ and he said, ‘We’ll be ready right now!’”

Cheever said performing with Tester for a second year was a lot of fun, especially watching other runners turning their heads towards the stage and realizing that it was one of them up there.

While performing in the 6 Mile Moment was a huge highlight for Cheever, running down Boylston with the finish line in sight was a moment he said you’d have to experience to understand.

“That last corner was everything, ‘Ah this is what I ran for.’ Everybody’s a rock star in that last ¾ of a mile stretch.”

Is it just me or is the name that follows “The Roast of” just a celebrity endorsement to get millions of people to watch comedians make fun of each other? Now, this is not something I am opposed to, which is why I decided to highlight the best Roasters Roasting Roasters jokes of the night.

All About That Bass…And Justice For Jason

All About That Bass singer, Meghan Trainor, is currently on a country and worldwide tour, which has music fans with bass on the mind. It's no coincidence that sound mixer for the 1988 Metallica album ...And Justice For All, has just revealed a major secret about the bass presence, or lack thereof, on the album.

Steve Thompson, has been the center of accusations for the almost completely inaudible bass levels of Jason Newsted for the past 27 years. Fans have gone so far as to remix the album themselves to highlight his performance. In a recent interview, Thompson revealed that it was actually drummer of Metallica, Lars Ulrich, who was responsible. His conversation with Ulrich went as follows, “’See the bass guitar?’ and I said, ‘Yeah, great part, man. He killed it.’ He said, 'I want you to bring down the bass where you can barely, audibly hear it in the mix.'”(Full interview here) Bringing down the bass coincided with bringing up the…drums of course!

If you're like me and don't know anything else about Metallica, you may find yourself critiquing it in a different way...it could use a little more cowbell.

I Know You Want It: 5 times we thought...is this copyright infringement?

Copyright lines can be blurred and it can be hard to know if a song is phareally original or not (I was forced to write that by none other than my own self).

Anyway, here are some examples of that and the true stories behind them.

To loosely quote Chandler Bing, "Could this be anymore infringed?" Vanilla Ice barely owned up to it and reluctantly paid Freddie Mercury and David Bowie and also gave them writers credit. This should really reflect negatively on Mr. Ice's listenership, but with that said, which song do you think I can karaoke to without the lyrics...word to your mother.

Abba and A*Teens
Not Actually Copyright Infringement
As a teen, I thought myself wise beyond my years recognizing that Dancing Queen was not an A*Teens original and therefore the group was not worth listening to. Come to find out, if my angst-y teen self had done a little research, I would have discovered that A*Teens is actually an Abba tribute band called Abba Teens. That's on me.

I Want A New Drug and Ghostbusters

These two songs are super similar and were released in the same year. It's especially shady, because Huey Lewis was first approached to do the Ghostbusters theme. This ended up settling out of court. Also, I’m sorry, but have you even heard of the song I Want A New Drug? Who really won here?

What?
Already Gone is one of those songs when it first comes on you think it’s something else…Halo. Both songs were written in 2008 and released in 2009, so it’s hard to believe that there was the possibility of Kelly Clarkson ripping off Her Majesty the Queen Beyonce, except…THEY HAVE THE SAME CO-WRITER! Apparently Kelly Clarkson confronted Ryan Tedder about it and tried to get the song removed from the album, but it was already in print. We all know if it was Her Majesty the Queen Beyonce, that song would have been removed from the album after print, and replaced by a 10-15 minute excerpt of her breathing and it would still be number one on Billboard today.

Meanwhile, has anyone even bothered asking the "ain't no Hollerback Girl" Gwen Stefani about the marching band uniform, where is the news on this feud?

11 Winners The Academy Didn't Have Time to Announce : Oscars 2015

Worst Part of the 87^th Academy Awards
Neil Patrick Harris: He has won four Emmy Awards for his outstanding performances as a four-time host of the Tony Awards. Last night, we all learned that is not a gig he should stray from. Providing awkward, cliché, and predictable jokes, most of which appeared to upset Oprah, NPH proved that he should stick to song and dance that is written and choreographed for him, as his major success last night was the opening number. That bit with the briefcase was so hard to see. It was like watching a five year old trying to make a dove come out of his hat, but the dove died.

Most Awkward Presenter
Eddie Murphy: He is definitely very upset about something and is taking it out on Sunday night, televised events.

Most Uncomfortable Encounter
John Travolta: This wasn’t on Idina Menzel at all. We must keep our hands to ourselves John.

Most Talked About Snub
Joan Rivers: Are you kidding me right now?! I have a deep, emotional connection with Joan Rivers. She’s my bio quote on Twitter for goodness sakes, I couldn’t be more connected to her! (Side note- follow me @ericaleblanc99 I’m super obnoxious) That woman invented the red carpet, not to mention she had random roles in obscure movies! Shame on you Academy.

Least Talked About Snub
