1. Pre-recorded Live streaming: The last three years have seen an explosion in Live Streaming content. The COVID-19 Pandemic created a need to communicate safely with customers, prospects, and leads, and live-streaming content was a highly effective solution for that need. In 2023, significant budget cuts and staffing shortages have created new challenges to communicating business messages. Again, companies are turning to Live Streaming as a solution to this challenge. We've seen a significant uptick in inquiries about partnering with a creative video production team to produce a high-quality pre-produced live stream video to engage with their audiences. Live streaming video lets businesses connect with their audience in real time and create a sense of urgency. And the value doesn't end with the conclusion of the event. Companies can repurpose the assets made for the live stream video in their other marketing communication efforts. Think web, email marketing, social media, fundraising, knowledge base, etc.

2. Short-for Video is an exciting way to connect and engage with customers and leads. How to Launch a Video Campaign and Get the Biggest Bang for Your Buck

Great! You’ve committed to producing video. But now that you’ve got the production piece squared away, what should you do?

Many of our clients know they need video and have a strong idea of what kind of video they need. Significant time and budget goes into the ideation, shooting and post production of these videos.

But often not as much thought gets put into what happens after the screening of the finished piece. Most clients will have a single purpose in mind, like a landing page or a resource page, but many haven’t thought about the video in campaign terms.

We want to make sure your video delivers real business results. Here are some helpful things to consider before launching your video campaign.

1) Where else can I use this video?

Brainstorm alternative places to use the video. If your primary use for the video is a landing page, think about adding it to vendor listing pages as well. Could the video help answer questions on your product page? Upload your video to your social channels, like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube.

Now, think outside the Internet-Box. Could the video play at your booth at the upcoming trade show? Remember that speaking engagement you committed to a while back? Well, this video could be perfect to warm up the audience before you start your presentation.

2) How often can I share this video?

A significant amount of your marketing budget went into production this video. Do you think it deserves as much play as the blog your CEO wrote a while back? Yes, it does.

Sit down and write at least ten different ways to frame your video. This is the fun part! Now write a different tag line for each. One, two short sentences, max. Mix sharing your video in with the cadence of other campaigns/content.

The benefit of this exercise is two fold. First, you are getting more use out of your shiny new video. Second, you’ll be able to test subtle differences in your messaging. This will allow you to see which one best resonates with your target audience.

3) How can I make sure more people see my video?

Piggybacking off the previous point, let’s talk hashtags for your social promotion. Take some time and research popular hashtags used in your industry and by your target audience. Is there a strong enough theme in your messaging to warrant finding a hashtag you can brand with this campaign?

If you’re not sure where to start in this research, check out RiteTag. They offer some free options for hashtag research.

Next, take a look at the title of your video. Make sure it’s SEO optimized. Now look at the SEO for the video’s landing page.

Finally, don’t be shy! If you want something, you have to ask for it. Ask for shares and mentions in your social promotions.

4) How can I create momentum for the launch of a new video?

There are many ways to drum up momentum for the launch of a new video.

Write a press release announcing your new video. Tie in your messaging and make sure to embed the video in your press release. Take a look at how to pitch relevant industry magazines (there are resources everywhere for this) and send your release with your note.

If you have the budget, you could produce a behind the scenes video to go with its release. That’s what New England Baptist Hospital did for their recent commercial campaign featuring Avery Bradley. [The commercial filmed at our client, NE Studios, studio.]

Release the BTS video either shortly before or shortly after the primary video’s launch. Make sure to create a link within each video to direct viewers to the other. Most video hosting platforms allow you to do this.

Communicate your launch goals and logistics with your partners and employees. Ask them to take part in sharing the video to their networks.

If you have the budget, ask your production company to include a :15 or :30 version of the video for a teaser campaign leading up to the video’s release. Share the teaser across your social platforms and your website. You could even include a countdown clock for the primary video’s launch.

If you don’t have the budget for a shorter version of your video, take hi res screen grabs from your video’s most compelling frames and share those instead.

Trending: "Come Together" Music Video

Five years ago we produced a music video for Godsmack’s cover of The Beatles "Come Together." At the time, they were in Boston recording their release, "Live and Inspired".

MEDIABOSS Creative Director Ian Barrett was tapped to direct the video. Ian has along history with the band, having worked with them from their early days in and around New England. Ian had the unique experience of watching the band record multiple times and felt strongly that Godsmack’s fans would enjoy an intimate look into this unique process. He pitched capturing the music video for Come Together while the band recorded the song, during the actual live album takes.

The style of the video was meant to emulate Ian's older style of capturing bands on film.

A lot of work into producing this video because every single frame of video is a genuine recording of the song. The final video showcases these takes and behind the scenes footage of the recording process, including playback, effects and overdubs.

Months later, the band decided to release “Rocky Mountain Way” as the first single and the “Come Together” was temporarily shelved and later on July 30, 2012 saw its debut on YouTube and Vevo . The video racked up about a million views shortly after.

Fast forward to this weekend - nearly 5 years after the video’s release date - and our iPhones were sounding off with alerts that our video was trending nationwide again. We were getting excited tweets as fans began to discover the music video for the first time. Ian and I were a little floored. How did this happen? Why now?

Well it turns out Society of Rock decided to write a nice article about the music video late last week and the blogger’s active followers promptly started to share it.

The video’s now seen 3.7 million views on Youtube (and 7K on our Vimeo page which we only use for client review).

The First Five Things I learned as a Production Intern

My name is John Zawawi, and I just finished my freshman year at the University ofMassachusetts Amherst. This is the first internship I’ve ever had, and I couldn’t be happier to be doing it at MEDIABOSS.

Being in a professional environment for the first time, I quickly realized that I know nothing.
There’s plenty of things you can learn in school, but your true education begins once you step foot inside the walls of a real workplace.

Now that I’ve settled in, I’d like to share some of the first lessons I learned (so far) while working for MEDIABOSS.

5. Making Coffee

The quintessential intern task, becoming the office barista is one of the first things to learn on the job. However, this doesn’t make it unimportant.

Whether it’s an editor on a marathon session or a client coming to the studio for the first time, being able to make a coffee saves time for everyone.

It may not be the most important thing I’ll learn from my time here, but being willing to make my colleagues’ lives easier is a guiding principal that I’ll take wherever I work in the future.

4. The Difference Between a Camel and a Dromedary

Coming into this internship, I expected to learn a lot about writing, production and filmmaking. I didn’t expect to learn what the difference between a camel and a dromedary is (answer: a camel has two humps, a dromedary has one). But I recently had this specific difference explained to me, because that attention to detail is what you need to have when working in professional environment.

You have to be an expert on whatever you’re shooting, whether it’s beer or the Boston Marathon. At MEDIABOSS, being the most prepared isn’t a goal, but a requirement.

3. Anticipate

On set, my job as an intern is to anticipate what everyone needs, and try and find a way to help them. Every second is precious. Sometimes, the difference between having gaff tape on your wrist and 10 feet away from you is costing the crew that last second of perfect lighting before the sun sets.

Good anticipatory skills are a result of paying attention to the filmmaking process. I learned very quickly that you have to be paying attention to each person’s job, which is something I’m
thankful to have to do: forcing myself to be constantly in tune on set has helped me soak in more of what is going on around me.

2. Never Leave For Post-Production What You Can Do In Production

On set, it’s easy to say “we can take care of that in post”. As it turns out, it’s not nearly as easy to do in post. Photoshop takes time (read: money), and the less editors have to do, the more efficiently the entire company can move.

As a successful company, there are always more projects coming in than there are editors.

Delivering them quality footage saves them hours of unnecessary work. In taking the time to make shots look perfect from the start, you get that time back tenfold later.

1. Everything is Storytelling.

What I believe is the most important thing I’ve learned since coming to MEDIABOSS is to look at every project as a story. Before, I only looked at visual storytelling in terms of film and television.

Even the simplest commercial has a story, and it is the job of the creative professionals who work here to tell that story in the best way they can. Approaching all projects as stories has helped me simplify the process. Asking the question, “what is the story here?” has allowed me to understand the purpose behind creative decisions made, and consequently has helped my own decision making process.

Unleashing The Full Power of Facebook Live

Here are the facts: Video performs well on Facebook and Live Video performs even better.

Most of the videos you see on Facebook Live are people sharing 5-20 minutes of an event.

Facebook Live is a great feature for sharing events with your friends the moment it happens. It lets you tap into the power of your curated social network and it makes viewing with a mobile device simple.

Now, if I were to cite a drawback it would be the limited quality of the shared audio and video. Cellphone video may not always be the best vehicle to share your brand.

We take a different approach. We've been using it to produce and share live multi-cam shows. In fact, we've had so much success with it, we started producing two live multi-cam shows at our studios.

You're may wonder how we can pull off a multi-cam switch with cellphones. The answer is that we don't. We use a Broadcast switcher and run optical connections to our cameras. We're running a television studio into FB live. This allows us to add some fun bling to our broadcasts: custom graphics, great audio and pre-packaged content.

What we love about it (and what you probably love, too) is the immediate sharing to a targeted audience through a social network.

This is the exact same set-up we use for Broadcast television, Livestream, Ustream, Justin.tv, etc. - but without the expense and hassle.

For many clients this type of sharing is groundbreaking and creates traction on a network that they have been cultivating for years.

The interface also allows for interaction via comments and reaction emojis with a slight, but manageable, delay.

Now, the technology itself is not new or particularly groundbreaking. But the power it gives to anyone with an account and a device is. Everyone now has the potential to be a broadcaster.

The secondary benefit is the ability to share the finished video in a variety of different ways. Research has shown that a 2/3 majority of the views happen after the live broadcast. Once a video publishes, Facebook Insights shows you where people joined and where they left. The insights also lets you see what parts of the broadcast they liked the most by noting the reaction emojis.

Our own recent experience with a radio broadcaster and our client was an out of the park success. The radio station loved it because it enhanced their broadcast AND gave them content to share after the broadcast was over. This meant that thousands of fans who weren't able to attend still got to see what they were missing.

The Daily Beast, CNN, and TMZ are just a few of the early adopters to Facebook Live video and they've seen great success.

This is the beginning of a big trend. We predict that as adoption increases, you'll see more high-end multi-cam productions on Facebook in the near future. And I'm sure it's making Google and YouTube a little nervous.

The way we look at it, if you are marketing person who wants to make something big happen for your company or your client, Facebook Live is a powerful option. And if you are looking to make a bigger impact than your competition, then looking into a multi-camera option is the right way to go.

How Practicing My Skills Have Allowed My Creative Work To Evolve

"I know you've heard it a thousand times before. But it's true--hard work pays off. If you want to be good, you have to practice, practice, practice. If you don't love something, then don't do it."

The saying 'practice makes perfect’ can apply to many disciplines –sports; music; art.

But it also applies to your work. Whether you are a master at spreadsheets, a whiz at making calls, or a commander of the conference room, the more you practice your role in the workplace the better you become. No matter your title.

I view every project we take on as an opportunity to hone my craft and to practice at it.

I’m proud of every piece of creative work I’ve produced because every piece of work is my best to date.

A unique dynamic of my job the ability to go back and see my past work. A quick search on Youtube and I can find our client’s past videos. Or I can search backup drives to find graphics and animations I’ve created.

Here are a few examples of transparent improvement in the work that I have done here at MEDIABOSS.

These past projects range from graphic lower thirds to full character animations.

Character Design:

Learning to draw characters takes lots of practice. The more you draw, the better your characters will turn out.

The key to creating dynamic characters is to draw them in strong poses. But drawing strong poses is much more difficult and takes considerable practice.

As you can see, the character on the right has a much stronger pose than the character on the left.

Character Animation:

Animating characters takes time. Exactly how much time depends on the amount of detail you're able to put in - and the budget with which you have to work.

The clip from 2014 is a less detailed character animation. The budget was smaller and the client’s timeline meant that I needed to animate quickly and under a strict deadline.

The clip below from 2015 has much more going on. This character has complex facial animation, as well as body language and attitude. It took several hours to complete this shot.

Logo Animation:

Logo animations can come in all forms. Whether it's a flat 2D style, or a complex and dynamic 3D design, each has their place, depending on time and budget.

3D designs are exponentially more complex and time consuming, but give a feeling of reality. 2D designs are simpler than 3D and can be completed in a tighter time frame, tools and expertise considered.

Above, you’ll see several examples of the 2D and 3D animations I’ve built over the years.

Lower Thirds:

Title lower thirds are essential for letting your audience know who, in your video, is on screen. Many lower third designs are either boring, or bought from a graphics template package.

At MediaBoss, we like to go above an beyond with our lower third designs. We even go a step further and animate them, rather than just fading them up in Avid.

These two examples show my creative growth and skill level over the course of 3 years.

The improvement in the way they are designed and animated is very clear. In my opinion, the graphic elements in the first one look like they were made by a toddler (haha.)

The example from 2016 shows my ability to create frame by frame animation. It is also line with Jack's Abby's branding.

CONCLUSION:

It doesn't matter if you work in graphic design, animation or any other creative medium, the only way you will get better at your job is if you practice.

The most important piece of advice I can give to anyone looking to improve their skills is to love what you do. Because when you love what you do, practicing feels like play.

6 Mile Moment: Boston Marathon in Downtown Framingham

Downtown Framingham came alive with Boston Marathon spectators last Monday. Hundreds of fans, families and friends flocked to The 6 Mile Moment to cheer on the participants of the 120th Boston Marathon.

It was hard to imagine that just three years ago this event didn’t exist.

This year marked the third annual 6 Mile Moment - an event we created with our partners, Framingham Downtown Renaissance and the Town of Framingham, to encourage urban revitalization and community involvement in Downtown Framingham.

“The idea of the The 6 Mile Moment was born of inspiration,” said Erin Hayes, CEO of MediaBoss Television. “MediaBoss had hosted its own informal events with live music and live video along the Marathon route for years. One day, Holli, Director of FDR, swung by our studios and asked us what we could do to bring a sense of community and pride to Downtown Framingham in the wake of the 2013 Boston Marathon Bombing. And thus, The 6 Mile Moment was born.”

Holli made the magic happen. She coordinated with the Town of Framingham; she found sponsors (like Middlesex Savings Bank); she secured meetings for us with the Framingham Police Department for proper permitting and she coordinated with local vendors to provide family-friendly activities for spectators.

We got to work doing one of the things we do best: Producing a live show, complete with live entertainment for the spectators and the runners. We live stream the event with our Blackmagic Design ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K and send a signal to Access Framingham. Access Framingham broadcasts our stream over their channel.

That first year was a big win for us. And The 6 Mile Moment has evolved and will continue to evolve year after year.

“This year we had more people join us in Downtown Framingham than I've ever seen, and they went full throttle to support their heroes running through the 6 mile mark,” said Holli Andrews, Director of Framingham Downtown Renaissance. "Dancing and singing for the runners, making beautiful signs -- lots of energy and tons of goodwill. Made for a very special 6 Mile Moment! It was awesome and I think the runners loved it, too!"

The Deluxe Depot Diner donates their entire parking lot to the 6 Mile Moment every year.

This year the entertainment was spread across both sides of their lot. DJ Haze was spinning high energy music for the runners and spectators on one side while Marcus Santos & Anova Brazil Live gave a dramatic percussion performance on the other. There was also face painting, games, free ice cream, music demonstrations, graffiti lessons and sign making for families and fans to take part in.

We already have some fun ideas about how we can improve upon and evolve the event for next year. But while we wait for next year to come around, here are some of our highlights from the 2016 Boston Marathon:

When we’re looking for inspiration, we do what everyone does: we turn to Google.

The other day I was looking for some new statistics about video marketing to use in a pitch. I had some great stats that I used in this Production Trends blog from January. But I wanted fresh information.

However, when I googled “Video Marketing Infographics” results from 2011 and 2012 showed first!

Now, this could be because 2011 and 2012 were the infographic's heyday.

But in Video terms, 4 or 5 years ago might as well be twenty years ago. The video production and video marketing landscape changes dramatically year to year. Thank new breakthroughs in technology and adoption rates for new technology for this trend.

Let's look at Mobile video plays as an example. Midway through 2015, mobile video viewing was 844% from 2012! Staggering, right? Statistics from 2012 just will not do.

So, I Googled again and added “2016” to my search. I found some pretty interesting stats from late last year and early this year.

The overwhelmingly popular statistics were that:

Facebook video - and social video in general - is not to be ignored.
If you’re not thinking about your mobile audience, you are missing an enormous opportunity
Traditional Television viewing is a thing of the past. Digital advertising is the place to put your money.

I'm going to circle back to what I was saying about the Infographic's heyday for a minute. A major reason for this visual content's fall was that its original purpose - to inform - was lost in its sudden rise in popularity.

I'm sure you can think of more than a few confusing infographics. Well, while new infographics may be a rarer find, the quality of what I found was great (and according to this paper, we'll see more great infographics in 2016).

3 Common Video Marketing Pitfalls (And How To Avoid Them)

We’ve heard it before: “No one watches our videos. Videos just don’t work for our business. Our customers don’t watch video.”

But invariably - when we start asking questions to dive deeper into the issue - we find out that the prospect made one (or more) of the three most common video marketing pitfalls we see.

The good news is that these pitfalls, as common as they are, are completely avoidable with a little prep.

In this post we’ll outline these three trouble areas and explain simple methods to avoid them.

1. You’re not sure who you are trying to attract.

Do you and your team have documented Buyer Personas? Because maybe you think you know who are trying to attract, but the rest of your team thinks your ideal customer is someone else.

Make sure you're all on the same page before you begin pre-production. Sit down in a room with the core people of your team and discuss your ideal customer.

Do you have a happy customer who would agree to an interview? Take them up on it! Draft a list of questions. If you aren't sure where to start, check out this downloadable template.

2. The video length/content isn't relevant to your ideal customer

Now that you know who your ideal customer is, let’s talk about what type of content they prefer.

What do we mean? Well, we could mean any number of things, but let's start with video length.

Recently The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) partnered with Millward Brown Digital and Tremor Video and released a comprehensive PDF called “Multiscreen Video Best Practices.” This report holds some great pieces of data you and your team may find helpful.

For example, did you know Millenials prefer 10 second videos while Gen-Xers prefer the standard 30 second video?

So go back to your target audience. Cater to their preferences and you’ll have a much better chance at success.

You’ve only embedded it on your website (and shared it once)

You’ve done all hard pre-production work until this point.

Really tough, but satisfying work. Now it’s time to see how your content optimization plays out.

Please, don’t make all your good work obsolete and only share your video on one platform, once.

"We embedded on our website, but we didn't get many views." Is your website Facebook? Is it Instagram? How about Snapchat? No. Well...there's your answer to 'Why'.

Go back to your Buyer Persona and think about your ideal customer. Where do they hang out online?

Create a social campaign around your video. Share it multiple times across your target audience’s favorite watering holes. Play around with the title of your video; experiment with hashtags; share the video at different times of the day.

Now collect all that data over a period of time and put that new knowledge toward your next video!

In short, the If You Produce It, They Will Come attitude just doesn’t work.

I’m not sure it ever really did, but I can tell you with certainty that it doesn’t work in 2016.

People are used to watching what they want to watch where they want to watch it. They’ll seek out your content if you prove to be a great content creator. But that takes time and does not happen over night.

So, take the time and do the work. Then measure and refine; measure and refine. You won’t be disappointed. And your audience won’t be either.
