Boston music blog, Boston Band Crush put on their fourth annual charity concert event, "One Night Band" Saturday night at the Middle East Rock Club. It's a great event every year; the bloggers pull Boston musicians' names out of a hat to form new super groups for a day. The new bands practice the day of the event at sponsored spaces, create new music and perform for a crowd of fans that night. Then, they break up. All the proceeds go to Zumix and Girls Rock Campaign Boston.

This year, they wanted to make the 8 new bands' performances (plus opening band Mosquitos in Tuxedoes and closing band MötörBöat) more accessible and live stream the event to the interwebs so fans could watch the rock show from the comfort of their own home. No babysitter necessary! Jim Gilbert of Plus1TV approached us about partnering up to make happen and we said, "Of course!"

We've been supporters of the local music scene for decades ("Real Rock TV" anyone?) and were thrilled a) have the chance to bring Boston Band Crush's fantastic event to a bigger audience, and b) produce a killer rock show. We live switched four cameras to capture and stream a dynamic viewing experience for those at home. The place was packed and the livestream.com/plus1tv channel - where we streamed it to - saw a great amount of traffic.

We're photo junkies and make sure to shoot stills at every one of our productions. Check out our gallery from the night below!

Color Palettes: Tools to Help You Choose

Erin Hayes July 03, 2012 Creativity, Social Television Blog, Design Leave a Comment

The next time you're selecting a client's corporate color palette or searching for the color scheme to your next project don't let the process take over the project. Check out these free tools instead!

    Color Hunter

Color Hunter is my personal go-to site when I need a little inspiration behind my color choices. It's simple to use and offers a great selection of randomly generated suggestions based on randomly generated photos from flickr. I'm a 'bigger picture' kind of person and it helps me to see the color palettes in action. If you are working with a specific picture, or know that you need to incorporate a certain color (as you often do when working with established brands) Color Hunter allows you to upload your own photo, enter the URL to a photo or search a certain hex color and provides a palette this way. Like many sites, Color Hunter gives you the 'dull' and 'vibrant' version of their suggested colors.

    Colour Lovers

This is a cool site and great for those who love collaboration. It's a community site that allows you to sort through hundreds of user generated color palettes as well as patterns, pattern templates, shapes and colors. Colour Lovers also provides resources on the latest color trends used in weddings, home, fashion, web, print, craft and business. You need to be a member in order to participate and save your palettes, colors, patterns, etc., but you can sort through the members' concepts as a visitor. I've found this helpful in the first stage of design. I can generally derive a good sense of direction from sorting through Colour Lovers' resources.

    Kuler

Kuler is Adobe's color palette generator. You can set your own palette by inserting the colors' hex values, or you can search through their library of color swatches. Once you are signed in to your Adobe account, you can download your color creations as Adobe Swatch Exchange (.ASE) files, which works with any of Adobe's Creative Suite applications. Personally, I prefer the sites that allow me to upload a photo to generate a palette, but I do like Kuler for its vast array of color palette suggestions. If left to my own devices, I could easily lose a day searching through the seemingly innumerable color combinations.

The Truth About the Grammys: A Chart

Erin Hayes February 09, 2012 Creativity, Design Leave a Comment

We've written about Column Five Media before; we love their infographics. This morning they released a chart, "The Truth About the Grammys," which predicts the outcome of this year's Grammys based on the pattern of past results.

Column Five - who created this chart in collaboration with Esquire - said this:

"There will never be a formula to accurately predict the outcome of the Grammy Awards, which are notoriously whimsical, almost to the point of becoming a punchline. But there are certain patterns to the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences’ record that can help one understand the choices, something even approaching a kind of logic."

It's pretty interesting to read. I'm looking forward to seeing whether any of their predictions come true!

How to Avoid the Zombie Lead

    [cs_section style="margin: 0px; padding: 45px 0px; "][cs_row style="margin: 0px auto; padding: 0px; " inner_container="true"][cs_column style="padding: 0px; " fade_animation="in" fade_animation_offset="45px" fade_duration="750" type="1/1"][cs_text]

Your sales cycle is killing your leads.

    Beware of the zombie lead.
Previously thought of as 'dead,' these leads are now known to come back.

Mediabistro recently published an article discussing what to do with 'dead' leads. They quoted research from Ed Gandia's "The Wealthy Freelancer."
According to Gandia's book, a large percentage of your 'dead' leads will hire someone to do what you do within 18 to 24 months of your contact.

In his example, a 'dead' lead qualifies as someone who responded to a pitch you gave, but did not return your follow-up call. Gandia says a common mistake sales people make is to follow up with only those leads who express either immediate interest or down-the-line interest. They drop the leads who do not respond to a follow-up call!

    This baffled me.

In the five years I've done business for myself, I've never had a 'dead' lead. I've only had long sales cycles. I'm sure anyone entrepreneur understands what I'm saying.

2015 Update: 63% of people requesting information on your company today will not purchase for at least three months – and 20% will take more than 12 months to buy. -Marketing Donut

That has been our experience again and again. We'll have someone contact us and say, 'Yeah, so-and-so told me about your company a year ago but we just weren't ready to hire yet.' Or we'll have someone we went back and forth with six months ago come back to us and engage again.

Sales is as much about creating an experience for and building relationships with people as it is about turning a profit. I believe that once a project is over, both parties–the vendor and the client–come away with more than a payment and product. They come away with a relationship. And relationships last a heck of a lot longer than a client/customer project.

When a potential relationship doesn't return a phone call or an email, we don't take it to heart. We understand building relationships can take time. We're more than willing to put the time into that development. We'll shoot them an email down the line or give them a quick a call after awhile, but we make it more about them and less about us. Because let's face it, no one likes a one-sided relationship.

Our sales cycle is a long one. I can tell you that 75% of our sales this year came from conversations and pitches we gave in early 2010. I can also tell you, with a fair amount of confidence, that at least 30% of next year's profits will come from these same leads. They'll either come back to us or they'll refer us to someone in their network

If we had given up on these leads as dead after eight months - and if I had not checked in every few months with a friendly email - we 'd not be in the position we're in now.

The lead is dead, long live the lead. I certainly hope so.

MediaBoss to Produce Video Backplates for Sully Erna's Solo Tour

MediaBoss Television May 16, 2011 Production, Press, Video Leave a Comment

MediaBoss Television, a broadcast media, video production company, announced today their production of the video backplates for the solo tour of Sully Erna, leader of four-time Grammy nominated rock band Godsmack.

Sully Erna brings his tour, Avalon, to Boston's Wilbur Theatre, Tuesday, May 17th, 2011.

"It was a pleasure working with everyone involved in MediaBoss," Sully Erna said. "I came to them with a large project as I was creating my new solo show for theaters, and the specific kind of work I needed done had to be hand created in a very small amount of time. Not only did they deliver top quality product to me, but they were amazing to work with. They were completely professional and creative with their suggestions to help me fill in the blanks. But most importantly they care and are very passionate about what they do. When you have talent and passion as a combination, you're destined to get great quality in return."

"Without a doubt this show would not have been what it is today without the help of MediaBoss," Erna added. "Thank you for bringing Avalon to life!"
